JOB DESCRIPTION
VETERINARY TECHNICIAN

REPORTS TO: Hospital Manager

The veterinary technician is the doctor's primary medical support person.  Technicians escort owners and pets into the exam room, begin the examination procedure and continue to assist the doctor throughout the examination, diagnosis and treatment phases.   They aid the doctors in achieving greater efficiency by relieving them of technical work and administrative detail.  They have a very significant role in communicating with clients about their pets.

- Performs all duties in accordance with hospital medical policies and procedures.
- Prepares, cleans and maintains the exam rooms and treatment areas.
- Performs physical examinations; records observations and history on patients in medical records.
- Assists the doctor in medical, surgical and dental procedures; prepares patients for surgery; assists the doctor in administering anesthetics; monitors patients during surgery and recovery; administers fluids.
- Performs dental scaling and cleaning procedures; charts teeth and assists with dental extractions or other procedures as directed by doctor.
- Gives injections and administers oral medications in accordance with government regulations and hospital policy.
- Performs emergency procedures such as control of bleeding, resuscitation with oxygen, opening airways, and external cardiac massage.
- Performs IV catheter insertion and replacement as directed by doctor.
- Assists in restraining pets when necessary.
- Records in medical records conversations with clients in legible manner.
- Performs clinical laboratory procedures such as fecal flotation exams, heartworm checks, skin scrapings, urinalysis, and fungal cultures; draws blood for laboratory analysis; maintains file of lab test results and ensures that test results are recorded inpatient records.
- Takes radiographs and administers EKGs and EEGs.
- Admits and discharges patients on the doctor's orders, ensuring that patients are well groomed and in a medically appropriate state.  Counsels clients on various aspects of animal care; explains dosage/purpose of medications; reinforces the proper care and procedures that should be followed at home; makes follow-up calls to clients.
- Understands usage and dosage for all prescription drugs including heartworm preventative and prescription flea control products and can readily explain them to the clients.
- Properly cleans all surgical materials after they are used; keeps the operating room properly stocked and prepared for surgery.
- Properly operates and cleans equipment (centrifuge; Abaxis blood machine; surgical equipment needing milk bath; autoclave)
- Properly cleans the laboratory/pharmacy area, all surgery/dental areas, and all exam rooms as needed.
- Prepares prescriptions as directed by doctor and required by pet.
- Maintains an appropriate inventory of all medical supplies as determined by the inventory control system if directed by owner or hospital manager
- Assists other staff members as required.
- Trains newer staff members on tasks as directed by owner or hospital manager.
- Vacuums hospital as scheduled by hospital manager.
- Returns calls to clients questioning discharge instructions or prescription administration or reactions, referring to a doctor when needed.  
- Assists receptionist and kennel with veterinary questions as skills allow to teach them and to allow them to care for pets or make appointments for clients.
- Call owners to remind them of young pet appointments or recalls after veterinary treatment as directed by owners
- Enter charges in computer and review entries to be sure they are correct before receptionist invoices out client, following hospital procedures.
- Performs other duties as determined by the doctors.

EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS
- High school diploma or equivalent
EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
- Minimum two years experience as veterinary nurse, technician or assistant.
PERSONAL REQUIREMENTS
- Genuinely enjoys working with animals and is able to deal with them even when they are stressed or ill or in pain.
- Can stay calm and efficient during a medical crisis.
- Is able to work effectively with doctors.
- Is experienced in the teamwork approach and works well with all hospital staff members.
- Has excellent client communication skills with coworkers and clients.
- Is able to learn new tasks quickly, efficiently and correctly and use them as directed
- Is able to train newer staff members as directed by doctor or hospital manager.
- Work as scheduled.
- Physical Effort: Work requires lifting and carrying animals (will be assisted or will assist other staff members in lifting animals over 40 lbs).  Walks or stands for extended periods or time; frequently works in a bent position.
- Working conditions:  May be exposed to unpleasant odors, noises and animal feces. May be exposed to bites, scratches and contagious diseases.
